I’ve uploaded my new Eclipse Chart that I’ve finished today. Here is some information that needs to go on the page itself.

Now in November 3, 2013 there will be a Hybrid Solar Eclipse witch I didn’t know what that meant so I had to find out.

The Hybrid Eclipse

A hybrid, or annular/total, eclipse is an eclipse which is seen as annular by some parts of the Earth, and total by others (and also as a partial eclipse over a much larger area). This image illustrates how a hybrid eclipse can occur:

Here, the Moon is just far enough from the Earth that the umbra can’t reach the “sides” of the Earth, so as the eclipse begins, the western portions of the Earth see an annular eclipse as the day begins. In the diagram, observers in the upper and lower parts of the eclipse track will see an annular eclipse.

As the eclipse path moves on, the umbra has less far to travel to reach the Earth, and is just long enough to reach the “centre” (ie. the part most directly facing the Moon); so observers in the centre of the eclipse track see a total eclipse. Such an eclipse would have a magnitude greater than 1.000, since the magnitude given for an eclipse represents the magnitude at maximum eclipse; but during the ends of the eclipse, the magnitude is less than 1.000.

People standing near, but not in, the annular/total eclipse track, would see a normal partial eclipse.

With the Moon that far from the Earth, the visible total eclipse will be a pretty small eclipse — i.e. with a narrow track, and short duration. For example, in the hybrid eclipse of April 8 2005, the total part of the eclipse was visible for 42 seconds at its maximum point, and its track was no more than 27km wide.

Here is a extension for Firefox that I just love! The Firefox ScrapBook extension is an absolute must-have for internet researchers, writers, and anyone who wants to build a searchable, annotated database of web clippings. It is the easiest way to archive your favorite sites when you don’t have the internet. (read between the lines…)

ScrapBook saves bits of web pages with notes to your computer along with the original URL. Organize your clippings in folders, highlight bits of text, change clipping titles, sort by date or alphabetically or add free form notes. (The screenshot above is a highlighted clip from a post from today.) ScrapBook is an incredibly well-executed in-browser editable knowledge base. The only feature that would improve ScrapBook is sync’ing to, say, an FTP server so that my ScrapBook would be the same same on every computer. Free, Firefox required (Mac or PC).

So you can get this extension and add it to Firefox if you use it. It’s really great but I’m afraid it doesn’t work for Internet Exploder.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/427

There is a problem that I have with this though and it’s that it is not able save the actual videos that stream in from Youtube and places like that. I had to get a different application for that completely. I looked around and finally decided on this one. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/video_cache_view.html

I use the VLC Media Player (it is a very good player) to play the flash videos in the format they are in, but it’s very annoying not be able to log the whole web page when it’s the videos that I was doing this archiving for in the first place.

January 26, 2009–The dark disk of the moon creeps across the setting sun during the first solar eclipse of 2009, as seen on Monday from Manila Bay in the Philippines.

People viewing from the southern Indian Ocean were among the few to see the full annular eclipse, so called because at its peak the eclipse is surrounded by an annulus, or ring, of fiery light.

Because the moon’s orbit is elliptical, its distance from Earth–and thus its apparent size–varies over time. Annular eclipses happen when the moon looks too small to completely cover the sun, an event that occurs about 66 times a century.

An Annular Eclipse begins the year 2009 on the 26th of Jan. NASA:

Annular Solar Eclipse of January 26

The first solar eclipse of 2009 occurs at the Moon’s ascending node in western Capricornus. An annular eclipse will be visible from a wide track that traverses the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much larger path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes the southern third of Africa, Madagascar, Australia except Tasmania, southeast India, Southeast Asia and Indonesia. (Figure 1).

The annular path begins in the South Atlantic at 06:06 UT when the Moon’s antumbral shadow meets Earth and forms a 363 kilometre wide corridor. Traveling eastward, the shadow quickly sweeps south of the African continent, missing it by approximately 900 kilometres. Slowly curving to the northeast the path crosses the southern Indian Ocean. Greatest eclipse[1] takes place at 07:58:39 UT when the eclipse magnitude[2] will reach 0.9282. At this instant, the annular duration is 7 minutes 54 seconds, the path width is 280 kilometres and the Sun is 73° above the flat horizon formed by the open ocean. The central track continues northeast where it finally encounters land in the form of the Cocos Islands and onward to southern Sumatra and western Java (Figure 2). At 09:40 UT, the central line duration is 6 minutes 18 seconds and the Sun’s altitude at 25°. In its final minutes, the antumbral shadow cuts across central Borneo and clips the northwestern edge of Celebes before ending just short of Mindanao, Philippines at 09:52 UT. During a 3 hour 46 minute trajectory across our planet, the Moon’s antumbra travels approximately 14,500 kilometres and covers 0.9% of Earth’s surface area. Path coordinates and central line circumstances are presented in Table 1.

Partial phases of the eclipse are visible primarily from southern Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Local circumstances for a number of cities are listed in Table 2. All times are given in Universal Time. The Sun’s altitude and azimuth, the eclipse magnitude and obscuration[3] are all given at the instant of maximum eclipse.

This is the 50th eclipse of Saros 131. The family began with an unusually long series of 22 partial eclipses starting on 1125 Aug 01. The first central eclipse was total in the Northern Hemisphere on 1522 Mar 27. It was followed by 5 more total eclipses before the series produce 5 hybrid eclipses from 1630 to 1702. The first annular eclipse of Saros 131 occurred on 1720 Aug 04. The series will produce 29 more annular eclipses the last of which is 2243 Jun 18. Saros 131 terminates on 2369 Sep 02 after a string of 7 partial eclipses. Complete details for 70 eclipses in the series may be found at:

Today is the first day of the month, the first day of the year of 5769. It’s Tisheri 1st the Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets which is the Jewish New Year. There is little resemblance between the Feast of Trumpets, one of the holiest days of the year, and a typical New Year’s Eve midnight drinking party. It is a celebration of the earth’s physical birthday on Tishri 1, the seventh month of the religious calendar, the first month of the civil calendar. It is the first of the fall holidays and usually occurs in September.
Judaism has several different new years. This is similar to the calendar year starting in January, the new school year starting in September, and many businesses starting fiscal years in July and September. In Judaism, Nisan 1 is the new year for the purpose of counting the reign of kings and months on the calendar. Regardless when the king became ruler, the coronation was on Tishri 1. Elul 1 (in August) is the new year for the tithing of animals. Shevat 15 (in February) is the new year for trees (determining when first fruits can be eaten, etc.), and Tishri 1, the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) is the new year for years.

During this time I was in the desert of ID, USA (don’t ask me why…) and, at the time I thought I caught the tale end of it as it came over the mountains. It was on the other side of the world so I was wrong. Here is a time lapse video I found afterward though.

The eclipse of Av 15th took place this day, and here is the info from NASA:

Partial Lunar Eclipse of August 16

The last eclipse of 2008 is a partial lunar eclipse at the Moon’s ascending node in Capricornus. It is visibile primarily from the Eastern Hemisphere as well as eastern South America (Figure 6). Greatest eclipse takes place at 21:10:06 UT when the eclipse magnitude will reach 0.8076. The timings of the major phases of the eclipse are listed below.

Penumbral Eclipse Begins: 18:24:49 UT
Partial Eclipse Begins: 19:36:07 UT
Greatest Eclipse: 21:10:09 UT
Partial Eclipse Ends: 22:44:16 UT
Penumbral Eclipse Ends: 23:55:25 UT

The Moon’s trajectory takes it through the northern umbral shadow, resulting in a partial eclipse that lasts 3 hours 8 minutes. At mid-eclipse the Moon’s northern limb passes 5.9 arc-minutes outside the umbra’s northern edge. The Moon’s southern edge is then 16.5 arc-minutes from the shadow’s centre.

Table 6 lists predicted umbral immersion and emersion times for 17 well-defined lunar craters. The timing of craters is useful in determining the atmospheric enlargement of Earth’s shadow (see Crater Timings During Lunar Eclipses).
